Real vs. Fake

It all started with a real one and a fake one. Can you guess which one is real and which one is fake? One contains dextrose, hydrogenated soybean oil, corn flour, citric acid, artificial flavor, blue lake 2 and red lake 40 as their blueberry ingredients. The other one contains…blueberries. Like, real ones!

If you couldn’t tell the one on the left contains fake blueberries, artificial flavors not only in the blueberries but in the mix itself too, bleached flour and hydrogenated oils (trans fat). ¬†The one on the right contains real blueberries and whole grains like flax and whole wheat.

While they may not look that different on the outside at first glance, the inside (YOUR inside!!) is where it makes a difference. You can make the muffin on the right for about the same price as the boxed mix on the left if you use sales. And the muffins can be easily frozen for later use. I made 18 muffins with the homemade mix. The mix on the left made 6 muffins. It takes a little more work, but you CAN eat healthy for close to the same price as eating unhealthy.

Can you believe my family picked the muffin on the left? They don’t like real blueberries!! In fact, my husband and I argued over blueberries!! (We were slightly bored that day if you couldn’t tell). It was like an episode of Smackdown. This time it was¬†Real vs. Fake. Blueberries!!

I’ve been writing for well over a year now on our journey to healthy eating. Many times I feel that I’m making huge steps–and other times it’s a total back step. It’s frustrating, but I’m not giving up!

(And yes, they have won this battle, but I haven’t lost the war :) )
