Earth Day as a child involved a pine tree. Every Earth Day we talked about the three R’s–reduce, recycle and reuse. A few of my elementary school years I can remember a little pine tree being given to us. I’m not sure why we went home with a little pine tree. I grew up in Southern California. Did we have pine trees out there? I can’t remember.
All I know is that after an afternoon of learning my three R’s and getting my little plant that would get rid of the bad ozone layer and reduce pollution I was passionate that we not get rid of that little plant. My parents were nice and said that it would grow into a Christmas tree by Christmas and we could decorate it. After about two weeks I forgot about it, it turned brown and my Mom quietly threw it into the garbage can.
So in honor of Earth Day and forgetting my little plant…and subsequent years of plants, flowers and gardens since that time I’m going a little green today.
