Healthy Uncrustables

Have you had Smuckers Uncrustables yet? We got to try them awhile ago and I must admit, it was nice just to throw them in the kids lunches and send them on their way. By the time lunch rolled around those perfect little sandwiches were thawed and ready for eating.

They aren’t very good for you though, and with friends who have children with food allergies I wanted to make sure that options were available when they came over to the house. These homemade uncrustables are perfect!  It seems like summer is always a revolving door of friends and family visiting, and I always like to have something ready for them. These sandwiches are fun to make and eat. They are perfect for a trip to the pool, a day out at the park, or whatever you choose.

You can find the uncrustable maker by heading to our store, at Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, or Pampered Chef.

Healthified Uncrustables

Yield: 4 sandwiches

Serving Size: 1 sandwich

This recipe for homemade uncrustables will make your life so much easier!

Ingredients

  • 8 slices whole wheat bread
  • Peanut Butter
  • Jelly

Instructions

  1. On four pieces of bread, spread a thin layer of peanut butter followed by a thin layer of jelly.
  2. Place the other piece of bread on top.
  3. Use the uncrustable cutter to shape your bread and remove the crust.
  4. Use discarded crust for bread crumbs or to make croutons.
  5. Freeze sandwiches in individual sandwich bags that are then placed in a large gallon freezer.
  6. You can easily double or triple this recipe to make and freeze more.
  7. Stays frozen up to one month in the freezer.

Notes

Variations: For children with peanut allergies, use a peanut butter alternative like sunflower butter or almond butter. For children with gluten allergies, use gluten free bread. The softer the bread, the easier it will be to cut with the sandwich maker.
