Apple Cinnamon Scones

Apple cinnamon scones are perfect for school lunches, or as a decadent breakfast or dessert.

It’s back to school time! I just sent my last one off to school this morning and it was bittersweet for me. My baby officially started elementary school. With the start of school comes the yearly “what am I going to make for school lunches?” syndrome. The kids are pretty much tired of the same old lunches by the second week of school.

Today, as a member of the Secret Recipe Club  we are featuring some great back to school ideas. Today I am honored to celebrate and feature a recipe from Corina at Searching For Spice. She has some fantastic back to school recipes that I fell in love with!

You have to check out her website because her “Five Little Ducks Went Swimming One Day” Biscuits are to die for cute! They would be a perfect snack for you and your little one to curl up with while reading a book when your little one gets home from school. I also fell in love with her “Chorizo Cheese Straws” under her biscuits too. It would pair perfectly with some fresh fruits and veggies as a school lunch.

But today I’m featuring her apple sultana cinnamon scones. For my kids lunches I included a cheese stick and some fruits and veggies for a different and fun back to school lunch. the kids loved it as we used an apple fresh off of our tree. And for those that have to google everything (hint, me!) sultanas are raisins. I did not include them in this recipe because one of my children (um, the 13 year old–ha!) would probably have a temper tantrum and cry out in anger should she so much as have a hint of a raisin in her food. So we went raisinless on this one.

Apple Cinnamon Scones

  • 250 gm (2 cups) self raising flour
  • 25 gm (2 tbsp) sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 apple
  • 50 gm (1/3 cup) raisins
  • 130 ml (1/2 cup) milk

  1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees celsius or 375 degrees faranheit. Lightly grease a baking pan and set aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, stir together the flour, sugar and cinnamon.
  3. Peel and core the apple. Grate the apple and add to the bowl. Add the raisins and milk and stir until combined. You want the dough to come together as soft, but not too sticky.
  4. Knead the dough on a gently floured countertop for several minutes.
  5. Flatten the dough in a circular shape to 2 cm or 3/4 inch thickness. Slice like a pie into 8 different sections. Place the dough on a lightly greased baking tray.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until scones are lightly browned around the edges.
  7. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before wrapping in individual portions. Individual portions can be frozen in a Ziploc container up to one month.

  2. Apple scones sound delicious. Happy Reveal Day!

  3. Yum yum, these scones sound delicious. They remind me of a nice apple pie but so much easier to put together from scratch. I can’t wait to try this out.
