30 Minute Apple Pie Pretzel Recipe

    May 10, 2013 by burntapple 9 Comments

You have to love biting into a soft, warm homemade pretzel with it's rich buttery flavor and yeasty interior. A hint of salt makes the pretzel perfect.

    apple pie pretzels

That homemade pretzels only take two hours to make and fill the counters with baking soda water that has splashed over the sides of the pot. The best part? The pretzels are devoured in literally ten minutes after they come out of the oven. While I love the fact that they are enjoyed, it's a lot of work to put in. And half the time if I don't tackle the kids and husband for one myself, then I don't get one at all.

This homemade pretzel recipe only takes thirty minutes to make and combines two classic all american flavors--apple pie and homemade pretzels.

    Yield: 12 pretzels

    Serving Size: 1 pretzel

This homemade pretzel recipe combines two classic flavors--apple pie and traditional pretzels.

    Ingredients

    • 1 ½ cups warm water
    • 2 ½ tsp yeast
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1 tbsp sugar
    • 2 cups whole wheat flour
    • 2 cups unbleached all purpose flour (or white whole wheat flour)
    • 1 large apple, peeled and cut into tiny pieces or ½ cup diced dried apples
    • 2 tsp cinnamon
    • 1 egg
    • 2 tbsp water

    Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet or line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in the water. Stir until the yeast mixes with the water. Add the sugar and salt and continuing mixing until sugar and salt are dissolved. Allow the yeast mixture to sit for about five minutes to proof.
    3. In a mixer with the dough hook attached, add the yeast mixture. Turn mixer to low and slowly add your flour one cup at a time. Continue to slowly add the flour into the mixture until the dough becomes tacky to the touch. Add the apple and cinnamon and continue mixing just until apples and cinnamon are incorporated into the bread.
    4. Stop mixture and drop dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough with your hands for approximately five minutes, or until the dough is smooth. Cut the dough into pieces and roll into ropes approximately twelve to sixteen inches long. If using fresh apples you may need to use additional flour when rolling.
    5. Form dough into pretzel shape.
    6. In a small bowl, whip together the egg and water.
    7. Dip the pretzels in the egg mixture and place the pretzels on the baking sheet, leaving 1-2 inches of space between pretzels.
    8. Bake pretzels for 10-12 minutes at 425 degrees. To brown the tops, turn on the broiler the last 2-3 minutes. Remove from oven and eat pretzels warm or allow to cool slightly before glazing.
    9. Variations: Mix together ½ cup coconut or granulated sugar and ½-1 tsp cinnamon (I love cinnamon so I go strong) and dip warm pretzels in melted butter than the cinnamon and sugar mixture.
    10. For glazed pretzels, mix together 1 cup powdered sugar and 2-3 tablespoons of milk until a glaze forms. Drizzle glaze on top of each pretzel.
