    Dog Truffles for Valentine's Day

January 14, 2019 by burntapple Leave a Comment

dog trufflesI can't believe that my most unfavorite holiday is just around the corner. But my faithful sidekick enjoys any excuse to enjoy a treat including these delicious carob dog truffles for Valentine's Day.

They are good enough for human consumption too. i sampled them. My mom and dad always tried to pass off carob as real chocolate to me growing up. I wasn't too bitter about the fact that they fed me dog chocolate my entire life so instead of getting angry, I got educated and I spent my first year of college on a chocolate sampling spree.

I was severly deprived and it was the only right thing to do.

My beautiful "thinks she is a human" 10 year old german shorthair pointer decided to spend Christmas sampling too! On Christmas Eve she decided to get into the food while we weren't looking. I'm usually onto her little game and food goes high up and out of her reach. But she was still able to grab some ham, rolls and brownies and the next day she started to have tremors.

We took her into the ER on Christmas day and spent several hours rehydrating her and getting her back on her feet. And it was NOT cheap.

And to thank me, she got home and tried counter surfing for food samples.

    Oh....I got MAD!

I usually don't get too mad at her but that dog knew I was furious! and ran out the dog door with her camel hump of IV fluid in her back and then poked her head back in the dog door to see if I was looking. I was, but I wasn't telling her that. When she came back in, she army crawled her way back into the house trying to pretend that I wasn't watching her. I finished my conversation with her about how I had spent HOURS caring and nurturing her and then having her NOT learn her lesson by counter surfing again. She just looked at me utterly confused at the kids laughing at me, me stomping my feet mad and her trying to figure out how to "fix" the situation.

Now that we are a little ways out the bitterness of the day has worn off and now it's time to think about Valentine's Day. These easy and simple Valentine's dog truffles are delicious and taste amazing! I mean, the dogs LOVE them but humans can eat them too. If you want.

    CHOCOLATE DOG TRUFFLES

    • 1 cup crisp rice cereal
    • 1 cup natural peanut butter
    • ¼ cup honey
    • 2 cups carob chips
    • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

    Directions:

Stir together the rice cereal, peanut butter and honey. Form into tablespoon sized balls and place on greased cookie sheet. Place in freezer.

While the mixture is freezing, melt the carob chips using a microwave or double boiler method.

Remove the balls from the freezer and place each on a fork then dip in carob. Allow the excess carob to drip off before placing the truffles on a waxed paper sheet to harden.

Once truffles are hardened, serve or store in an airtight container for up to one week.
