Delicious and easy to make gluten free french fried onions are the perfect topping on your favorite dish!
I've kind of been on a salad kick lately. Even though I have never been a big red meat eater, the steak salad I've been making has been in the rotation lately.
The weather is heating up and I am being stubborn and not turning on the air conditioner yet. I love throwing open the windows and catching the warm afternoon breeze.
Unfortunately that means the house warms up so it's salad for dinner.
I love french fried onions and the steak salad just screams for them as a fun topping that bring together a lot of the salad flavor. These gluten free french fried onions can be eaten plain (guilty!!--had to make a few batches before I actually had some to top the salad), or on top of your favorite meat, salad or dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 onion (we recommend red or sweet)
- Milk for soaking onions (we used plain almond milk)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- ¾-1 cup gluten free flour blend
- Oil (canola, olive or coconut) for frying
Instructions
- Slice onion into thin rings. Place the onion rings into a bowl and cover with milk. Allow onions to soak for several minutes.
- In a Ziploc bag, place the salt, pepper and gluten free flour blend. Combine, then set aside.
- Heat oil in frying pan.
- Place the onions a few at a time in the Ziploc bag. Seal, then shake to coat. Place the onions in the frying pan until lightly browned, then flip and cook other side.
- Remove onions from heat and allow to drain on paper towels.
- Continue to coat onions in flour blend and cook until finished.
- Top onions on your favorite recipe.
