Teaching my almost teen daughter that positive messages are important (and needed!) in this world are ways that I can teach her that social media is a positive outlet. With all of the negative aspects they learn about the internet and social media from school, it's nice to help them see it's positive too. In addition to sharing positive messages, we also love to share positive photos and share the great things happening in our life. And we encourage our kids to not just share selfies of themselves, but how others are influencing them. Pictures of them with their siblings, serving others, and hanging out with friends are popular photos. We also encourage them to positively comment on friends accomplishments and activities posted online.
One of the hardest things is limiting what they are viewing online. Making sure they are only allowed to access the internet (even phone internet) from a public place is important. Talking about what they are accessing and viewing is also important too. They also know that the phone is not their's, it's ours and we are able to access it at any time. We also have passwords and codes set up for the internet so they have to earn their time on the Internet and tablets by having chores done, homework done and have attended their after school activities.
