Salted Caramel Sugar Cookies with Salted Caramel Buttercream Frosting

The idea behind the salted caramel sugar cookies with salted caramel buttercream came to me on Super Bowl Sunday. With a giant jar of homemade salted caramel sauce staring me down everytime I opened the fridge, it was like it was daring me to cook something with it instead of dipping my spoon inside and taking a bite everytime I went into the fridge. I had to come up with something. Anything! I had hungry people coming.

So the idea was born to make sugar cookies. I took it a step further and stirred a little bit of salted caramel sauce into the batter. They were absolutely delicious all by themselves. Of course, every time I opened the fridge the jar of salted caramel was challenging me again. So I made a salted caramel buttercream frosting and topped each cookie off with it.

But that wasn’t enough either! In my opinion, you can’t have enough salted caramel, so I finished each cookie off with a drizzle of salted caramel sauce.

Now they were perfect!

By the end of the first quarter the cookies were being devoured just as fast as the Ravens were gaining yardage. And even though the team I wanted to win didn’t, it was okay. I still had my cookies.

These cookies are absolutely perfect for the salted caramel fan in your house. They have the sweetness of a frosted sugar cookie with the warmth of caramel. Add a little touch of salt and it balances it out for the perfect combination of sweet and salty. You can’t go wrong with these cookies!

That’s a mouthful!

A deliciously sweet sugar cookie filled with the warmth of caramel and a hint of salt.

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 4 tbsp butter softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce homemade or storebought
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups unbleached all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 1/4 cup salted caramel sauce
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tsp milk (if needed to thin)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder and baking soda. Set aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter, sugar and salted caramel sauce on medium speed for 2-3 minutes. It will not get light and fluffy like when you traditionally cream butter and sugar but should have a nice smooth consistency.
  4. Turn the mixer to low and add in the egg and vanilla, mixing until combined. Stop and scrape bowl, then turn mixer onto low. Add the flour mixture and stir until all flour has been incorporated.
  5. Drop batter by tablespoons onto a lightly greased cookie sheet, leaving approximately two inches between cookies. Bake for 10-11 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned.
  6. Remove from oven and allow to cool on cookie sheet for several minutes before moving to a wire cooling rack. Allow cookies to cool completely before frosting.
  7. To finish cookies: Spread desired amount of frosting evenly on each cookie, then drizzle additional salted caramel sauce on top of the cookie.
  9. In a mixer, blend together the butter, caramel sauce and powdered sugar until smooth and frosting holds it's shape when turned off. Add milk one teaspoon at a time to thin if needed. Spread frosting onto cookies, or pipe onto cupcakes if making.
