Chocolate Gold Medal

We are so excited that the Olympics are starting this week! Are you ready? We have a great edible craft project that will be perfect for watching your favorite Olympic events!! It takes just a few minutes to make and they are so much fun to eat. You can see someone had a little bite out of ours before photographing. Your kids will love making and eating their Olympic craft just as much as ours did.

We actually made these during the summer during my daughter’s dance camp. It was gymnastics day and for their crafts they got to make these fun gold medals. I think this would also be a fantastic pirate party idea. You could make chocolate gold coins easily by not making a hole in the top of the chocolate.

You will need one bag of chocolate chips, Wilton’s edible gold spray (you can find these at craft stores or at baking supply stores. (aOur local Joann’s, Michaels and Hobby Lobby had it in stock).

You will also need a muffin tin (use mini muffin tins for smaller medals or regular sized muffin tins for larger medals) and straws. We recommend plastic straws.

You will also want some red, white and blue (or whatever country you are from) colored ribbon to loop it through the medal.

  • 1 12oz package semi sweet or milk chocolate chips
  • Plastic straws
  • Muffin pans
  • Ribbon
  • Wilton Edible Gold Spray (found at craft stores and baking supply stores)
  • Parchment Paper


  1. Using the double boiler method or in the microwave, melt the chocolate. Once chocolate has melted, spoon the chocolate into the bottom of the muffin tins. You will want to fill approximately 1/8-1/4 inch of the bottom of the muffin pan with chocolate.
  2. Once you have spooned the chocolate into the muffin pans, cut your straw into 1 inch long pieces. Place the straws in the top of the chocolate, leaving at least 1/8 inch space from the edge of the muffin pan.
  3. Allow chocolate to harden in the fridge for up to one hour. Remove from the refrigerator and remove the straws, then loosen the chocolate from the muffin tins. You can remove chocolate discs by sliding a knife around the edge, or dipping the muffin tins in warm water for several seconds to loosen.
  4. Place the chocolate discs on a sheet of parchment paper. Spray the chocolate with edible gold spray and allow to dry.
  5. Measure, cut, then run the ribbon through the hole and tie.
  6. Note: To make gold coins, simply skip the step where you are asked to use a straw to make a hold in the top of the chocolate.


We found the gold spray to rub off rather easily even after it dried, so be careful when running your ribbon through the hole.
