Beef stew has rich deep roots in American society. Beef stew and other variations of stew were served as a hearty meal for pioneers to eat as they crossed the plains. It was also made for soldiers to eat during the Civil War. Now it's become a staple at tailgating parties. Stadiums also serve it as a way to warm up during cold fall games. There are rumors that Bono of U2 was one of the influences behind making beef stew a stadium staple . With the cold air blasting outside, inside you'll find plenty of fans watching an NFL game or the Superbowl with a hearty bowl of beef stew!
Ingredients
This beef stew needs:
- Beef stew meat
- Beef broth
- Vegetables
- Onion
- Potatoes
Preparation
There are several easy ways to prepare this recipe. You can make it in the slow cooker or do an easy thirty minute stovetop version.
Stovetop
On medium high heat in a pot, brown the meat. (Approximately five minutes) Set the meat aside and in the pan place the vegetables, onion and potato. Cook for several minutes until vegetables are tender. Add the meat and beef broth to the pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat to a simmer. Allow stew to cook for approximately 20-30 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Season with salt and pepper if desired.
Slow Cooker
Place all ingredients in a slow cooker. Season with salt and pepper if desired. Cook on high for 4-5 hours or low for 6-8 hours.
Storage
Beef stew really seems to taste better as the flavors have more time to come together. Often stew tastes better the next night! You can store beef stew in an airtight container for several days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop as desired.

Five Ingredient Beef Stew
Ingredients
- 1 ½ lb beef stew meat
- 3-4 whole russet potatoes chopped into bite sized pieces
- 2 ½-4 cups beef broth
- ½ cup diced yellow onion
- 1 cup bite sized frozen vegetables carrots, peas, celery
