Why Make a Chocolate Gold Medal?

Whether it’s a birthday, sports event, or an academic achievement, a chocolate gold medal makes for a unique and personalized gift. It’s a sweet way to honor someone's hard work and success!

Crafting a chocolate gold medal is a great activity for kids and adults alike. It combines creativity with culinary skills, making it a fun project for family gatherings or parties.

We've made these chocolate gold medals for our Josh Gate's party, to accompany our DIY treasure hunt dig, and to go along with our pirate birthday party.

    Ingredients

The ingredient list is simple for this recipe! All you need is:

    • Chocolate Chips
    • Gold or silver food spray or dust
    • Ribbon
    • Chocolate medal mold
    • Plastic straws

    Substitutions

If you are needing to make some substitutions for this recipe, it's very simple to do.

    • Dairy free: It's very simple to substitute dairy free chocolate chips.
    • Vegan: You can use vegan chocolate chips.

    Tools You'll Need

    • Chocolate Mold: Round molds are ideal for medal shapes.
    • Double Boiler or Microwave: For melting the chocolate.
    • Pastry Brush or Food-Safe Paintbrush: To apply gold dust.
    • Ribbon: To complete the medal look.
    • Piping Bag: For adding designs or inscriptions.

    Instructions

    • Melt chocolate using a double broiler or microwave. Stir until smooth and chocolate is melted. To melt in microwave, set cook time for 30 seconds. Remove from microwave and stir, then repeat at 15 second intervals until chocolate is melted.
    • Pour the chocolate into muffin pans or circle cookie cutter shapes. Fill approximately ¼ inch full. Smooth out and remove any bubbles. Place straw at the top of every medal. (see video for instructions).
    • Place chocolate into refrigerator and allow to set up for approximately 15 minutes. Remove from refrigerator and from molds.
    • Decorate (see notes below) with edible spray or dust then string the ribbon through after gold dust or spray has set.

    Tips

    • Choose Quality Ingredients: The taste and texture of your chocolate medal depend on the quality of chocolate you use.
    • Practice Tempering: Tempered chocolate is easier to work with and gives a professional finish.
    • Be Patient: Allow the chocolate to cool and set fully before decorating or handling.
    • Experiment with Flavors: Add extracts like vanilla, mint, or orange to the melted chocolate for a unique twist.

    Storing

Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid refrigeration to prevent condensation and discoloration.

    FAQ

What type of chocolate works best for this project?

High-quality couverture chocolate is ideal due to its smooth texture and superior flavor. However, any baking chocolate or chocolate chips can also work.

Can I use food coloring on the chocolate?

Yes, but make sure to use oil-based food coloring, as water-based options can cause the chocolate to seize.

Where can I find edible gold dust?

Edible gold dust is available at baking supply stores or online retailers. Look for products specifically labeled as food-safe.
