    Enjoy a delicious chocolate egg cream recipe made with chocolate syrup, seltzer water and milk. We make this recipe with minimal ingredients and can even make it dairy free too!

    What is Chocolate Egg Cream?

    Chocolate egg cream actually contains NO eggs! Originally called 'chocolat et creme' the name somehow got changed to 'chocolate egg cream.' It started to be served at soda fountains with U-bet chocolate syrup. This chocolate syrup uses real cocoa and cane sugar which is unlike a lot of the chocolate syrups today which use corn syrup.

    This treat has significant nostalgia for older and younger generations of Jewish decent. It's still served in several locations throughout New York City where it originally started.

    Hanukkah Treat

    Chocolate egg cream has become a popular Hanukkah treat. Adult drinks usually opt to serve it with chocolate liquor but the soda shoppe version includes U-bet chocolate syrup, seltzer water and milk.

    Ingredients

    For this recipe you will need:

    • Chocolate syrup
    • Seltzer water
    • Dairy free milk

    Dairy Free

    For dairy free just substitute unflavored dairy free creamer or dairy free heavy whipping cream and dairy free chocolate syrup.

    Lower Sugar

    For a low sugar variation, use sugar free seltzer water and sugar free chocolate syrup:

    Making It

    Making chocolate egg cream is simple. Add all the ingredients, then stir together until the top becomes nice and frothy! You can use an immersion blender but I like blending it by hand. Just keep blending until an inch of foam appears on the top of your drink.

    Storing

    This drink is best served fresh! I don't recommend storing it.

    Ingredients
      

    • 2 tablespoon milk
    • 1 cup seltzer water
    • 2 tablespoon chocolate syrup

    Instructions
     

    • Pour mixture into tall glass. Stir until blended and approximately one inch of foam appears at the top of the drink. Drink immediately.

    SUBSTITUTIONS:
    The original recipe was made with U-Bet chocolate syrup. 
    For LOWER SUGAR version use sugar free chocolate syrup and sugar free seltzer water. 
    To make a DAIRY FREE version use dairy free chocolate syrup and dairy free milk. (We suggest using dairy free heavy whipping cream or unflavored dairy free creamer.
