Cozy up this season with a new breakfast favorite: hot cocoa pancakes! Made with hot cocoa protein powder, these pancakes combine rich chocolatey flavor with a protein boost, perfect for a comforting yet nutritious start to your day.

    Why Hot Cocoa Pancakes?

Whether you're fueling up after a morning workout or simply treating yourself, these pancakes are a delicious way to enjoy the classic taste of hot cocoa in a whole new form. Hot cocoa is perfect in cookies, cocoa and even for your dogs!

    Ingredients

To make these pancakes, you'll only need a few ingredients—most of which you likely already have on hand:

    • Protein Pancake Mix
    • Water, Milk or Dairy Free Milk
    • Marshmallows, Chocolate Chips, Chocolate Syrup, Whipped Cream for Topping

    Instructions

In a bowl, just stir the protein pancake mix and liquid together. Cook the pancakes then top with your favorite hot cocoa ingredients! You can omit the toppings for a healthier protein pancake.

    Storage

The prepared pancakes can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several days or you can store them in a Ziploc bag or airtight container in the freezer for up to a month.

Why use hot cocoa protein powder?

What type of protein powder you use is totally up to you. I personally usually use unflavored collagen protein powder in most of my recipes because the kids can't taste it. So for me it's a great way to sneak in some extra protein.

For this recipe, I used Naked Nutrition Hot Cocoa Protein Shake. It's pea protein based so it's plant based, vegan and gluten free.

    FAQ

Can I use regular hot cocoa mix instead of protein powder?

Yes, you can substitute hot cocoa mix for the protein powder. However, keep in mind that hot cocoa mix doesn’t contain protein, so you’ll be missing the extra nutrition. To add protein, consider adding a scoop of unflavored protein powder.

Can I make these pancakes gluten-free?

Absolutely! Simply substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Make sure your protein powder is also gluten-free if you’re sensitive to gluten.

Can I add chocolate chips to the batter?

Yes! Fold in about ¼ cup of chocolate chips after mixing the batter for an extra burst of chocolate flavor in each bite.

What milk alternatives work best in this recipe?

Most milk alternatives will work well, including almond, oat, and coconut milk. Use whichever milk you prefer for a smooth and consistent texture.

    Ingredients

    • ¾ cup protein pancake mix
    • ¼-1/3 cup water, non dairy milk or milk
    • Chocolate syrup, marshmallows, chocolate chips, whipped cream for topping (optional)

    Instructions

    • Preheat griddle to medium heat. While the griddle is heating, mix together the pancake mix and water or milk until smooth. Depending on the protein you are using, additional liquid may need to be added a tablespoon at a time. See video for desired consistency.
    • Drop ¼ cup of pancake batter onto the griddle, leaving several inches of space between to allow for pancakes to expand. Cook for several minutes until edges of pancake are cooked, then flip and cook for several minutes on the other side until pancake is cooked through thoroughly and lightly browned. Remove from heat.
    • Place pancakes on plate and top with desired toppings.
