    Ingredients

This recipe does not offer the same minimal ingredient list it usually does but it does offer an easy and simple meal that cooks all day. You just need a few minutes in the morning to get it started! For this recipe you will need:

    • Chicken: Boneless, skinless chicken thighs (or breasts) work best.
    • Marinade: You will need a few ingredients to get this marinade going and cooking with the chicken.
    • Sesame Garnish: Sesame seeds, green onions (chopped).

    Instructions

Let's get started making your slow cooker honey sesame chicken!

    1. Place the chicken into a lightly greased slow cooker. In a bowl, mix together the honey, soy sauce, onion, ketchup, oil, garlic and red pepper flakes. Pour over the top of the chicken.
    2. Cook on low for 4-6 hours or high for 3-4 hours, just until chicken is cooked.
    3. During the last half an hour of cook time for the chicken, prepare the rice in a rice cooker.
    4. When chicken is cooked, remove the chicken from the slow cooker and transfer to a plate. Shred the chicken.
    5. In a small bowl mix together the cornstarch and water, then mix into the slow cooker with the remaining sauce. Pour shredded chicken back into the slow cooker. Toss to combine. Serve.

    Substitutions

This recipe is easy to make for food allergies, intolerances and preferences.

    • Gluten free: Make sure you use gluten free soy sauce.
    • Vegan: Substitute tofu or tempeh for the chicken. You can use a vegan friendly soy sauce like Bragg's liquid aminos.

    Storing

You can store this recipe in an airtight container and reheat for up to three days. You can also freeze the meat after cooking up to one month.

    Tips

    • Don't overcrowd the slow cooker! Arrange the chicken pieces in a single layer for even cooking.
    • Check for doneness! An internal temperature of 165°F ensures perfectly cooked chicken.
    • Thick and saucy? If you prefer a thicker sauce, simmer the glaze for a few extra minutes or mix in a cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water) until thickened.
    • Feeling fancy? Serve with steamed broccoli or peppers for a colorful and healthy side.
    • Make it an easy meal by making your meal into a honey sesame chicken bowl.
