    Making Creme Brulee French Toast

Start your morning off right with this luxurious slow cooker creme brulee French toast. Made with thick slices of bread, creamy custard, and sweet caramelized topping, this oven-free breakfast treat is sure to wow your guests on special occasions.

As a child, Sunday mornings always included a big breakfast with sausage, eggs, and a pastry. Except in my house it was tofurkey sausage, some sort of healthy pastry (or a trip to Dee's doughnuts--not so healthy, but delicious!) and organic eggs. When my parents went vegetarian they did some sort of horrid tofu scramble with soy cheese.

As a Mom, I want my kids to have fond memories of Sunday morning breakfasts. I don't really know how my parents had time to bake and cook meals with two kids. I always seem to have a toddler hanging on me, two other kids needing me (at the same time the toddler is hanging on my legs), two dogs running around the house, and a husband who is MIA when the craziness of the day begins.

Gather Ingredients and Prepare Slow Cooker

To get started, gather all the necessary ingredients, including 6 large eggs, 4 cups of half-and-half, ½ cup of light or dark brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and one teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Next step is to spray the inside of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray, add in the eggs, half-and-half, brown sugar, vanilla extract and cinnamon, and whisk until combined. Then cut up your French bread into thick slices and place them on top of the custard.

    Mix Together Custard

In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, brown sugar, vanilla extract and cinnamon until combined. Pour the custard over the top of the French bread slices and then use a spatula to press them down into the custard so that they are completely covered. Cover and cook for 8 hours on low. Serve with maple syrup or fresh fruit then enjoy your delicious recipe made with minimal ingredients!

    Soak Bread in Custard Mixture

Place the bread slices into the slow cooker and pour the mixture over top of them. Use a spoon or spatula to press down on the bread so that it is completely covered in custard. Let stand for 15 minutes, then repeat this step one more time to make sure the bread is completely soaked in the custard. Cover and cook according to directions. Serve after 4 hours with favorite toppings of choice. Enjoy!

Layer the Slow Cooker With Bread / Custard Mixture

Before starting, generously butter the bottom and sides of the slow cooker. Take the French bread or Challah bread slices and begin to layer them over each other in the cooker. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup of heavy cream, 3 large eggs, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon until combined.

Bake Overnight for a Fluffy French Toast

After you’ve added the custard mixture to the slow cooker, cover and set to ‘low’ heat. Bake in your slow cooker overnight (at least 8-10 hours) until light and fluffy throughout. The French toast should have an even color around the edges of the cooker once cooked through - when finished, remove from your slow cooker and serve with toppings of choice. Enjoy!

How long is Creme Brulee good for?

The creme brulee french toast should stay good in the refrigerator for 2-4 days. Keep it covered in an airtight container.

    Equipment

    • slow cooker

    Ingredients

    • 1 loaf challah bread or french bread cut into one inch cubes
    • 4 cups milk or half and half
    • ½ cup brown sugar or coconut sugar
    • 3 eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • Caramel sauce for topping

    Instructions

    • Lightly grease your slow cooker. Place the cubed bread into the slow cooker. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Pour over the bread. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for several hours. (You will want to soak the bread for at least four hours and up to twenty four hours to allow the egg mixture to soak in to the bread. I usually make this up in the morning, then turn the crockpot on before going to bed so it's ready the following morning).
    • To cook: Set the crockpot on the low heat setting and cook for eight hours. For last half an hour of cooking, remove lid and allow mixture to vent. After the last half hour of cooking, remove slow cooker from heat and allow to cool for approximately 20 minutes before serving. Serve topped with caramel sauce.
