Baked Mozzarella Sticks

The Superbowl is right around the corner and so it’s time to start thinking about appetizers. Every year I try to mix a few healthy Superbowl recipes in with our traditional ones so those who are wanting better options have them. These baked mozzarella sticks are some of the kids favorites! They love to dunk them in ranch dressing, alfredo sauce or marinara.

The kids are going to love having these! Who am I kidding? The grownups will love them too! Just remember to serve them up hot!! We also included how you can make these into a quick and easy freezer meal too

Baked Mozzarella Sticks

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: 24 sticks

Serving Size: 2 sticks

Ingredients

  • 24 part skim mozzarella sticks (I cut a block of part skim mozzarella into 24 rectangles)
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups fine bread crumbs (whole wheat or gluten free is fine)
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp seasoned salt (or regular salt if you don't have seasoned salt)
  • Ranch, marinara or alfredo sauce for dipping.

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with tin foil or parchment paper that has been lightly sprayed with non stick cooking spray. Arrange the mozzarella sticks on the baking sheet then cover with plastic wrap and allow sticks to freeze in the freezer for about 30 minutes.
  2. When the 30 minutes is close to up, crack and beat the egg in one bowl, place the flour in another bowl and mix together the bread crumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder and salt or seasoned salt in a third bowl.
  3. Remove the sticks from the oven. Roll each stick in the flour, then dredge in the egg, then roll completely (don't forget the tops and bottoms of the sticks too!) in the bread crumb mixture, making sure all sides and top and bottom are covered in bread crumbs. Place the sticks back on the baking sheet when finished.
  4. After all the sticks have been covered in the bread mixture, place the sticks back in the freezer for an additional 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees while the sticks are freezing.
  5. Remove sticks from oven, then place immediately into the preheated oven, Bake for 5-8 minutes, then flip the sticks and bake an additional 5-8 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately serve with marinara sauce, alfredo or ranch dressing.

Notes

To Freeze: After rolling the sticks in the flour, egg and bread crumb mixture, place the sticks directly in a freezer safe Ziploc bag. Freeze until ready to use. To serve, cook as directed above.
