A delicious gourmet twist on a classic grilled cheese, this sourdough grilled cheese sandwich combines the tang of sourdough bread, the savory crunch of bacon bits, and the creamy richness of cheese.

Bacon just makes everything better. Take a chapter out of some of our recipes like bacon flavored crackers, or our steak and chicken bites. This sandwich tastes amazing with a side of mac and cheese.

    Instructions

Let's get going making your sandwich. It tastes the best hot off the griddle!

    butter the bread
    1. Step 1: Spread butter on each side of each slice of sourdough bread.
place buttered side down for your sourdough grilled cheese in griddle. Top with one slice of cheese.

    sprinkle bacon bits on top
    1. Step 3: Sprinkle bacon bits on top and then top with a second piece of cheese and remaining bread.
serve sourdough grilled cheese sandwich immediately
    1. Step 4: Cook for 2-4 minutes on one side until cheese starts to melt, and bread is browned. Flip, cook an additional 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat, let stand 1-2 minutes before serving.

    Substitutions

You can make this sandwich easily for a variety of different dietary needs and preferences.

    • Gluten free: Schar gluten free bread seems to be the most gluten free sourdough bread tasting bread. I would recommend this brand or a dedicated gluten free sourdough bread.
    • Vegan and Dairy free: You can make this sandwich vegan by using dairy free cheddar cheese and vegan bacon bits. For a dairy free version, use dairy free cheddar cheese.

    Variations

Use garlic butter in place of butter to butter your bread. You can also change up the type of cheese you use as well!

    Storage

This recipe is best served hot and fresh off the griddle.

    FAQ

Can I use a different type of bread?

Yes! While sourdough adds a delightful tang, you can substitute with ciabatta, whole grain, or even brioche for a slightly sweeter flavor.

What pairs well with this sandwich?

Pair it with a cup of tomato soup, macaroni and cheese, a side salad, or some crispy sweet potato fries for a complete meal.
