Do you remember your grandparents pouring pork shake and bake bread crumb style coating into a clear resealable bag, then tossing it? Do you remember shaking it manically to cover all the meat pieces in coating? With only five ingredients or fewer, you can create a mouthwatering meal that’s quick to prepare, budget-friendly, and full of flavor!

What is pork shake and bake?

Shake and bake was created as a simple meal idea. Seasoned bread crumbs are tossed in a bag with raw meat so the meat becomes covered in the seasoning. The chicken is then cooked in the oven until thoroughly cooked through. While cooking the chicken develops a nice coat and crunch with the breadcrumbs.

    Ingredients

    1. Pork Chops – Bone-in or boneless pork chops work well for this recipe.
    2. Breadcrumb Coating – Use store-bought shake-and-bake mix or make your own with breadcrumbs, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
    3. Eggs – Beaten eggs act as a binding agent to help the coating adhere to the pork chops.
    4. Vegetable Oil – A light coating of oil ensures a crispy finish.
    5. Vegetable Side – Optional but highly recommended. Choose roasted broccoli, carrots, or green beans for a balanced meal.

    Instructions

    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). While the oven heats up, prepare your ingredients.
    • Set up a coating station with two shallow dishes: one with beaten eggs and the other with the breadcrumb mixture. If you’re making your own shake-and-bake mix, combine breadcrumbs with a teaspoon each of garlic powder and paprika, and add salt and pepper to taste.
    • Dip each pork chop into the beaten eggs, ensuring it’s fully coated. Next, press the chop into the breadcrumb mixture, making sure all sides are evenly covered.
    • Lightly grease a baking sheet with vegetable oil or line it with parchment paper. Place the coated pork chops on the sheet, leaving space between them for even cooking.
    • Bake the pork chops for 20-25 minutes, flipping them halfway through. The internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C) when checked with a meat thermometer.

    Substitutions

    • Gluten free: You can substitute gluten free shake and bake for the shake and bake mixture.
    • Vegan and vegetarian: Substitute vegan and vegetarian pork chops in place of the pork chops. Use an egg replacer in place of the eggs.

    Storing

Store leftover pork chops in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat them in the oven at 350°F to retain crispiness.

    Tips

Here are some simple tips for serving:

    • Roasted Vegetables: Toss broccoli, carrots, or green beans with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Roast them alongside the pork chops for a hassle-free side.
    • Mashed potatoes: For a comforting pairing, whip up some creamy mashed potatoes. Simply boil, mash, and season potatoes with butter and milk.
    • Salad: Keep it light and refreshing with a simple green salad. Mix lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and your favorite dressing.

    FAQ

Can I use boneless pork chops?

Absolutely! Boneless pork chops cook faster, so check for doneness around the 15-minute mark to avoid overcooking.

What if I don’t have a meat thermometer?

While a thermometer is the most reliable tool, you can check for doneness by cutting into the thickest part of the chop. The juices should run clear, and the meat should be white with a hint of pink.

    Is shake and bake healthy?

This recipe is relatively healthy, especially when paired with nutrient-rich sides like roasted vegetables or salad. For a lower-fat version, skip the oil and bake on parchment paper.
