Making Gourmet Dog Cookies at Home

Making gourmet dog cookies at home is a wonderful way to treat your furry friend. There are lot's of fun recipes on the internet but the ones I'm making today are peanut butter carob dog treats with a beautiful drizzle of peanut butter or carob on top. These gourmet dog cookies have a peanut butter base (a dog's favorite) with oats that are great for added fiber and egg for a shiny coat.

    Is Carob Dog Safe?

Yes, carob is safe for dogs. Dogs cannot have chocolate, and carob does not contain chocolate. If you have any questions on whether your dog can have carob, please consult your veterinarian.

Using a Food Processor for Ease

To make the cookies, I used our Hamilton Beach Stack n' Snap 10 cup food processor. I love how easy it was to use--oh my goodness it tells me which blade to use and what button to press depending on what I'm making. And I don't need an instruction booklet--it's right on the food processor!

    Ingredients

Making the cookies is simple and easy! Here are the ingredients you will need to get started:

    For the Cookies:

    • whole wheat flour
    • oats (quick or rolled is fine)
    • natural smooth peanut butter
    • water
    • egg

    For the Frosting:

    • carob chips
    • Additional peanut butter for drizzling

    Instructions

    Making the cookies is simple!

    For the Cookies:

    1. In a food processor, mix together the whole wheat flour, oats, peanut butter, water and egg until a ball is formed. (You may need to add a little more flour or a little more water if necessary).
    2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
    3. Lightly flour your rolling surface. Roll dough out to ¼ inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters, then place cookies on lightly greased cookie sheet leaving ½ inch space between cookies.
    4. Bake at 375 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until cookies are browned and no longer soft to the touch in the center.
    5. Allow cookies to cool completely before frosting.

    To Frost The Cookies:

    1. Using the double broiler method (or the microwave melt chocolate 🙂 method) melt the carob. Dip the front side of the cookies in carob. Allow to set. (One of the great things about working with carob is that it hardens quickly. If your carob starts to harden, simply put it back in the microwave or on the double broiler again to melt).
    2. Melt a large spoonful of peanut butter in the microwave or on the stove until a glaze like consistency. Drizzle over the cookies and allow to set up.
    3. Store in an airtight container.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Questions come up! Here are some that you might have when making these cookies.

    Can you add other mixins?

Absolutely! Feel free to add berries, cut up sweet potato or carrots like with these apple pumpkin dog treats.

How can I make our cookies more festive?

You can ad some sprinkles and frosting like these pretty gourmet dog treats.

    Additional tips for making cookies:

    • Use ingredients that are safe for dogs to eat. Some ingredients that are toxic to dogs include chocolate, grapes, raisins, and onions.
    • Make sure the cookies are cooked until they are golden brown. Undercooked cookies can be dangerous for dogs.
    • Let the cookies cool completely before serving them to your dog. Hot cookies can burn your dog's mouth.
    • Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
    • Make sure to consult your veternarian if you have any questions about your dogs dietary needs.

    Peanut Butter Carob Dog Treats

    Traci Wennerholm
Carob dog treats are a healthier alternative to chocolate-based treats, making them a paw-some choice for your furry friend. Derived from the carob tree, carob is naturally sweet and contains no caffeine or theobromine, which can be harmful to dogs in large amounts.
