    Substitutions

Everyone can enjoy these tacos no matter your dietary needs or preferences!

    • Gluten free: Using corn tortillas will allow the recipe to be gluten free. Also make sure your taco seasoning is gluten free.
    • Dairy free: Omit the cheese or use dairy free cheese.
    • Vegan: Substitute a vegan pulled pork like this jackfruit alternative.
    • FODMAP: Use a FODMAP friendly taco seasoning that omits garlic and onion.

    Variations

This recipe is fun to play with because you don't need to make the same tacos pictured. You can always change it up and play with new toppings!

    Some toppings could include:

    • Shredded lettuce
    • Diced tomatoes
    • Sliced avocado or guacamole
    • Salsa (mild, medium, or hot)
    • Sour cream
    • Shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, etc.)
    • Diced onions (red or white)
    • Fresh cilantro
    • Pickled jalapeños
    • Lime wedges
    • Pico de gallo
    • Hot sauce
    • Refried beans
    • Sliced radishes
    • Grilled or sautéed bell peppers
    • Corn kernels (grilled or roasted)
    • Cotija cheese
    • Pickled onions
    • Crema
    • Fresh jalapeño slices

    Equipment

There are a number of different ways you can prepare your tacos. You can use an oven, air fryer, or slow cooker! I linked to the ones that we have at our house.

    Storage

You will want to store the cooked pork separate from the tacos. Assemble the tacos just prior to serving.

You can freeze the cooked and shredded pork for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to use it, simply thaw in the refrigerator and reheat before assembling your tacos.

    FAQ

Are corn tortillas necessary, or can I use flour tortillas?

Traditional street tacos use corn tortillas, but you can substitute flour tortillas if you prefer. The flavor and texture will be slightly different, but both options are delicious.

Can I use a different protein instead of pork?

Yes, this recipe works well with other proteins like chicken and beef. Just follow similar cooking instructions for your chosen protein.

Can I adjust the amount of taco seasoning?

Absolutely, you can add more to taco seasoning for a spicier kick or less for a milder or more kid friendly version.

    Equipment

    • air fryer optional
    • slow cooker optional

    Ingredients

    • 1.5 pounds pork shoulder or pork loin
    • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
    • 8 small corn tortillas
    • Toppings see notes in post

    Instructions

    • Rub the pork shoulder (or pork loin) with 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning, ensuring it's evenly coated.
    • Cook your meat using your preferred method (see notes)
    • Once the pork is fully cooked, remove it from the heat and use two forks to shred the meat into bite-sized pieces
    • Heat a dry skillet over medium heat and warm the corn tortillas for about 30 seconds on each side until pliable. Alternatively, wrap the tortillas in foil and warm them in the oven.
    • Place a generous amount of shredded pork on each tortilla.
    • Sprinkle with desired amount of toppings on top of each taco.
    • Serve the tacos

    Notes

    Cooking methods:
Slow Cooker Method: Place the seasoned pork in a slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or until the pork is tender and easily shredded.
Oven Method: Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Place the pork in a covered baking dish and cook for 3-4 hours until tender.
Stovetop Method: Cook the pork in a large pot over low heat, adding a bit of water or broth to keep it moist, for about 2-3 hours until tender.
Air Fryer Method: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Initial Cook: Cook the pork in the air fryer at 375°F (190°C) for about 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through. This helps to develop a nice crust on the outside. Lower Temperature Cook: After the initial cook, reduce the temperature to 325°F (165°C) and continue cooking for an additional 1 to 1.5 hours. The pork should reach an internal temperature of 190-205°F (88-96°C) for easy shredding. Let it rest 10-15 minutes before shredding the meat.
